What is Common SENSES?

Common SENSES is a collaborative research project between Northeastern, communities in Roxbury and Dorchester, and the City of Boston to support Environmental Justice action in the neighborhoods along Blue Hill Avenue in from Dudley Commons to Franklin Park. Together we will deploy environmental sensors and use participatory modeling to make better decisions on where to place green infrastructure investments.

Environmental Data + Community Input = Smart Planning

Extreme heat      Air Pollution      Street Flooding

These all come from decades of planning without community voice

Let's do it with Common SENSES this time!

Our Values

No Surveillance

We do not collect any information on people or their behavior in public or private settings. Our sensors only collect environmental data such as temperature, air pollution, and humidity.

Environmental Justice

We are committed to enabling conversations between community members, local organizations, and public officials about Environmental Justice in the Blue Hill Housing Action Plan

Data Justice

We believe that data collected in the community should be made available so that local stakeholders can use them to pursue their needs and interests.

The Boston Area Research Initiative (BARI) researchers at Northeastern are experts in working with sensor data. Together with community expertise we will:

• Map the extent of disparities across the community

• Publish them through a co-designed public platform

• Incorporate them into community meetings on the Housing Action Plan

How the data will be used

Take Action on Blue Hill Ave.!

The Common Senses Collaborative will install environmental sensors along Blue Hill Ave. from Dudley Commons to Franklin Park.

Community members will help decide what these sensors measure. That could include:

  • Flooding

  • Heat

  • Noise

  • Humidity

  • Light pollution

  • Air Pollution

Join the effort to decide what the sensors will measure and where.

Be a community scientist by becoming a sensor steward.

Thanks for signing up!
